Theme and Main Idea of stories seem to give many students trouble. They are often confused and students have a hard time differentiating between the two literary concepts. Our wonderful and always helpful school librarian pulled some books from the elementary library and brought to the MS library for students to choose from. The books pulled had a distinct theme to them and allowed students to easily read the book and identify theme and main idea within the class period. Students also worked on writing short answers that include text evidence allowing them to understand that main idea and theme will both have evidence in the text to give them clues to identify those terms.

Understanding 1st, 2nd and 3rd points of view can often be tricky, especially when one digs deeper to identify 3rd person objective, 3rd limited and 3rd omniscient. Students used the iPads to access Google Classroom while doing a gallery walk to identify the points of view of passages taken from published books, so students could see how understanding and identifying the point of view aides in further comprehension and understanding in real-life texts. Google classroom aided in the ease of their saved materials and 'turning in' their assignment...no paper to lose and environmentally friendly.
